How much does an EV charger cost to install in Dorset?

A standard 7kW home charger is typically £800–£1,200 fully installed across Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset, depending on the charger you choose and how far your parking is from the consumer unit. We give you a fixed price up front — and where the cable run is longer or the consumer unit needs attention, we’ll quote that clearly after a quick survey.

Grants and eligibility

The government’s EV chargepoint grant is no longer open to homeowners in single houses, but landlords and people living in flats or rented homes may still qualify for up to £350 towards an installation. Businesses can also access workplace charging schemes covering multiple units. We’ll tell you honestly whether you’re eligible.

Your EV charger questions, answered

Do I need an approved installer? Yes — home charge points must be fitted by a qualified, approved electrician to meet Part P and BS 7671. We’re NAPIT-approved and notify your DNO where it’s required.

How long does it take? A typical home installation is completed in half a day.

Can you install if my parking is away from the house? Usually yes — we plan the cable route and protection on a short survey first.

Will a smart charger save me money? Yes — a smart charger lets you schedule charging for cheaper overnight electricity, and can balance with solar if you have it.

Home charging allows you to start each day with a full battery, so you don't have to worry about finding a charging station during your daily routine.

An EV charger install often goes hand in hand with a consumer unit upgrade if your existing board is old or full, and pairs perfectly with solar PV and battery storage so you can charge from your own energy. We also handle new electrical installations, commercial and workplace charging, and EICR safety inspections. We install EV chargepoints across Dorset, including Poole, Bournemouth and the surrounding towns.

EV charger installation FAQs

How much does it cost to install an EV charger?

It depends on the charger you choose and how far the cable needs to run from your consumer unit. We survey the property and give you a clear, fixed quote up front — including any board upgrade if one is needed.

Do I need a special charger and circuit?

Yes — an EV charger runs on its own dedicated circuit and must be a smart, OZEV-standard chargepoint. We install 7kW smart chargers from the leading brands, tethered or untethered to suit you.

Can I charge my car from my solar panels?

Yes. With solar PV and a compatible charger or home battery, you can use your own generated electricity to charge your car — cutting your running costs. Our renewables division can design the whole system.

Is there a grant for an EV charger?

The government EV chargepoint grant is available for people living in flats and rented homes, and there’s a separate Workplace Charging Scheme for businesses. We can advise on your eligibility.

Do you certify the installation?

Yes — every chargepoint is installed on a dedicated circuit, certified to BS 7671, and notified as required. You’ll receive the relevant electrical certificate on completion.

Charging times depend on the battery size and charger speed. A Level 2 charger typically adds about 20-30 miles of range per hour, while a Level 1 charger adds about 3-5 miles per hour.

While some Level 1 chargers can be plugged into a standard outlet, Level 2 chargers usually require professional installation by a licensed electrician for safety and compliance reasons.
