Three-phase supplies, capacity upgrades and temporary builders’ supplies, designed and built by a NERS-accredited ICP.
Most commercial projects hit the same wall: the existing supply is too small for the new kitchen, the machinery, the heat pumps or the chargers, and the network operator’s quote comes with a programme that does not match yours. As a NERS-accredited Independent Connection Provider, Dorset Electrical Solutions can design and build the new supply or upgrade ourselves, from the point of connection to the cut-out, and coordinate the network operator’s part of the job in the background.
We look after three-phase and low-voltage supplies for industrial units, farms, schools, care homes, workshops, retail and hospitality, plus temporary builders’ supplies for construction sites. Where the load justifies it, we will tell you early that an 11kV connection and substation is the better route.
A new connection is more than a cable. We take responsibility for the whole route so you have a single price, a single programme and a single person to call. The network operator’s non-contestable charges are shown separately in our quote.
Three-phase supplies and upgrades for machinery, compressors, ovens and process loads.
Supplies for grain dryers, cold stores, dairies, irrigation and diversification projects.
Capacity for all-electric heating, catering and future EV charging.
Temporary builders’ supplies, installed early and converted at handover.
Refits, extensions and new kitchens that outgrow the existing supply.
Cold storage, conveyors and fleet charging in distribution units.
Resilient supplies for surgeries, clinics and care settings.
Sites replacing gas and oil with heat pumps and electric process heat.
The most expensive mistakes in connections are made at the sizing stage. Ask for too little and you are back in the queue in three years; ask for too much and you pay for capacity and infrastructure you never use. We size the supply from your equipment schedule and your plans for the site, including chargers, heat pumps and solar export, and we look at whether load management or on-site generation changes the answer.
You get a written recommendation with the reasoning, so the decision is yours and it is made once.
Most businesses start on a single-phase supply and outgrow it the moment they add a commercial kitchen, a compressor, a welder, a heat pump or more than one EV charger. A three-phase supply gives you roughly three times the capacity on the same service and runs large motor loads properly.
Whether the upgrade is a simple change at the cut-out or needs a new service cable from the street depends on what the local network can offer. We check that at feasibility, apply to the network operator for the new point of connection and carry out the contestable works ourselves, so the upgrade lands on the date you need it. Inside the building, our own electricians can replace the distribution board and rebalance the circuits in the same visit.
A construction site needs power from day one: welfare cabins, tower cranes, hoists, small plant and lighting. A temporary builders’ supply gives you a metered connection on site, installed early and positioned so it can later become part of the permanent supply or be removed cleanly at handover.
We design the temporary supply with the permanent connection in mind, so the same application, route and point of connection can serve both. That avoids paying twice for civils and shortens the gap between completion and occupation.
We confirm what the local network can offer and what the upgrade will involve, and give you a budget figure.
We apply to the network operator, design the connection and agree a fixed price for our works.
Civils, cabling and jointing to the agreed programme, by our own engineers.
Commissioning, metering and handover, with the assets adopted by the network operator.
Realistic planning figures from enquiry to energisation. We confirm the programme for your site at the feasibility stage.
| Job | Typical programme | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-phase to three-phase upgrade on an existing service | 6 to 12 weeks | Faster where the existing mains has capacity |
| New three-phase supply from the existing mains | 8 to 14 weeks | Depends on the network operator’s point-of-connection offer |
| New supply needing a new mains cable | 12 to 20 weeks | Route length, streetworks permits and reinstatement |
| Temporary builders’ supply | 4 to 8 weeks | Best requested as soon as the site is confirmed |
| Capacity increase needing reinforcement | 16 to 30 weeks | Set by the network operator’s reinforcement works |
Send it to us. We can usually accept the non-contestable element and price the contestable works separately, and we will tell you if the quote is best accepted as it stands.
We size the supply from your equipment schedule and future plans, not just today’s load, and design headroom for chargers, heat pumps or solar export where it is sensible. Over-sizing costs money, so the feasibility stage is where we get this right.
Yes. Single- to three-phase upgrades are one of the most common jobs we do for growing businesses. Whether it is a straightforward service alteration or needs a new mains cable depends on the local network, which we confirm at feasibility.
Yes. We install site supplies for cabins, cranes and plant early in the programme and convert or remove them at handover.
The non-contestable works: assessing the impact on its network, any reinforcement and approving the point of connection. Those charges are shown separately in our quote so there are no surprises.
Yes. Dorset Electrical Solutions is a full-service commercial electrical contractor, so the same team can deliver the switchboard, distribution, lighting and power behind the new supply.
Usually, yes, for a new supply or a change from single to three-phase. The meter is fitted by your electricity supplier’s meter operator; we register the MPAN and coordinate the appointment so the meter goes in for energisation day.
A three-phase supply delivers power over three conductors rather than one, giving roughly three times the capacity of a single-phase supply and smoother running for motors and large equipment. Most commercial and agricultural premises with significant loads need one.
It depends on the capacity, the distance to the point of connection and whether the network operator needs to reinforce its network. We give a budget figure at feasibility and a fixed price for our works once the design is approved, with the network operator’s charges shown separately.
Tell us where the site is and what it needs to power, and we will come back with the options and a budget figure.
