If you have been searching for closed-circuit television near you over the last few months, there is a good chance you came away more confused than when you started. Megapixel counts, subscription tiers, “AI detection”, cloud storage plans — it is a lot of noise for what should be a fairly simple decision.
We install and maintain CCTV across Poole, Bournemouth, Ferndown and the wider Dorset area, and the questions homeowners ask are almost always the same ones. So here is a plain-English guide to what actually matters, without the sales pitch.
The term is older than most of the kit it now describes. Closed-circuit simply means the video feed travels to a defined, private set of screens or recorders, rather than being broadcast openly. That is the whole idea.
In practice, a modern home system is three things: cameras, something to record onto, and a way of viewing footage — usually an app on your phone. Everything else is detail.
Quick to put up, no cabling, and genuinely useful as a stopgap. The trade-off is that you are recharging batteries every few months, recording tends to be motion-triggered rather than continuous, and cold weather shortens battery life noticeably. Fine for one problem spot; frustrating as a whole-property solution.
A step up, because constant power means constant recording is possible. You are still relying on your Wi-Fi reaching a camera at the far corner of the building though — and in older Dorset properties with thick masonry walls, it often does not. Worth testing signal at the exact mounting point before committing.
Each camera gets a single cable carrying both power and data back to a recorder. It is the most dependable option: no batteries to manage, no dropouts when the broadband wobbles. It needs planning up front, because cable routes have to be worked out before anything goes on the wall, but once it is in, it stays working.

If your cameras capture anything beyond your own property boundary, including a shared driveway, a pavement or a neighbour’s garden, UK data protection rules apply to you as the operator. In practice that means being able to justify the coverage, putting up a visible notice, and being willing to hand over footage if someone in shot asks for it.
None of this is a reason to avoid CCTV. It is a reason to think about camera angles at the planning stage rather than after a conversation over the fence. A good installer will raise this with you before anything is drilled.
For a single battery camera, no. Beyond that, it depends on what the installation touches.
Anything that involves a new spur, a fused connection unit, work in a consumer unit, or cabling routed through walls and loft spaces should be done by a qualified electrician. Fixed wiring is not a DIY job — a poorly made connection in a loft is a fire risk that nobody sees until it is a problem. Outdoor camera power in particular needs the right IP-rated enclosures and proper cable protection to survive a Dorset winter.
It is also worth knowing the condition of the circuits you are adding to. If your property has not had an EICR electrical safety certificate in the last ten years, that is a sensible thing to sort out before hanging new equipment off ageing wiring.
